Telegram also known as “Taar” in India, a bearer of small and urgent messages will be evanescence from India on 15th July 2013, due to raising inclination of people towards SMS and emails.
The services of telegram were commenced in 1850s which was later privatised by Indian telecommunications company Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited which took over the postal services in 1990s and after 2 yrs the company increased the price of 50 words message from INR 4 to INR 27. In March 2013 company ceased all the services of international telegrams and was also reported the loss of 17 million INR in the last two fiscal years. Hence, it has been decided to terminate all the telegram services after discussing about it with Department of Posts to take the failing services back. In a colloquy, an official of National Federation of Telecom Employees told First Post India that termination of telegram services would be highly deleterious to unions and telegram employees as telegrams are still used in many poor areas where people are unable to afford mobiles, desktop, and internet.
